Our Manifesto

What Does It Mean to Be (a) Human in 2035?

The Turning Point

We are living through the most consequential transformation in human history. Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant promise - it is here, accelerating at a pace that outstrips our collective ability to comprehend, govern, or even meaningfully debate its implications.

Within a generation, AI systems will likely surpass human cognitive abilities in virtually every measurable domain. This is not science fiction. It is the consensus of leading researchers, technologists, and institutions worldwide. The question is no longer whether superintelligent AI will emerge, but what kind of world it will emerge into - and whether we will have done the work to ensure that world reflects our deepest values.

DARI exists because this moment demands more than passive observation. It demands a deliberate, global effort to understand what is at stake, to preserve what matters most, and to actively shape the trajectory of our shared future.

Paradise or Extinction

The spectrum of possible outcomes is breathtaking in its range. At one extreme lies a future of extraordinary abundance - where disease is conquered, poverty is eliminated, and human creativity flourishes unbounded by material constraints. At the other lies existential catastrophe - scenarios in which humanity loses control, relevance, or even its continued existence.

Between these poles lies a vast landscape of possibilities, most of them shaped by decisions being made right now, in boardrooms and laboratories, by a remarkably small number of people. The rest of humanity - the billions whose lives will be most profoundly affected - largely remains on the sidelines, unaware of the magnitude of what is unfolding.

DARI refuses to accept this asymmetry. We believe that the future of humanity cannot be decided by the few. It must be understood, debated, and shaped by the many.

Optimistic Curiosity

DARI is neither utopian nor dystopian. We approach the future with what we call “optimistic curiosity” - a disposition that takes the risks seriously while remaining open to the extraordinary possibilities that lie ahead.

We believe in humanity's capacity for wisdom, creativity, and moral imagination. We believe that the same species that produced philosophy, art, science, and democratic governance is capable of navigating this transition - but only if it chooses to engage with it deliberately, honestly, and collectively.

Optimistic curiosity is not naivety. It is the recognition that fear and denial are equally dangerous responses to radical uncertainty. The future will be shaped by those who show up to shape it.

Critical Reflection

The technology industry operates within a powerful narrative of inevitability - the idea that progress is linear, that more technology is always better, and that disruption is inherently positive. DARI challenges this narrative, not from a position of hostility to technology, but from a commitment to honest, rigorous reflection.

We ask the questions that markets and quarterly earnings reports do not: What is being lost in the pursuit of efficiency? What assumptions about human nature are being encoded into systems that will govern billions of lives? Who benefits, and who bears the cost? What happens when the pace of change exceeds our capacity for adaptation?

These are not anti-technology questions. They are profoundly human questions - and they deserve serious, sustained attention from the broadest possible range of voices.

Legitimacy and Financial Independence

DARI is structured as an independent foundation, free from the influence of any single government, corporation, or ideological faction. This independence is not incidental - it is foundational. The questions we address are too important to be filtered through the lens of any particular interest.

Our financial model is designed to ensure this independence in perpetuity. Through the Tesseract project - a monumental physical time capsule containing one million individual digital legacies - DARI generates the resources necessary to sustain its work without reliance on conditional funding or political patronage.

This is not merely a fundraising strategy. It is an expression of our core belief: that the institution tasked with safeguarding humanity's collective future must itself be free from the short-term pressures that so often distort good intentions.

A Reminder of Human Unity

In an age of deepening division - political, cultural, economic, generational - DARI stands as a reminder that certain questions transcend all boundaries. The emergence of superintelligent AI will not respect national borders, cultural differences, or ideological camps. It will affect every human being on Earth.

This shared vulnerability is also a shared opportunity. For the first time in history, humanity faces a challenge that genuinely requires a global response - not as an abstraction, but as a practical necessity. DARI exists to help build the bridges, the understanding, and the institutional capacity that this response demands.

We are not naive about the difficulty of this task. But we are convinced of its necessity. The alternative - a future shaped by accident, by the interests of the few, or by the momentum of systems no one fully controls - is not one we are willing to accept.

The question is not whether the future will be different. It is whether it will be human.
